January’s Garden Journal

During the winter months the amount of work on our plate has slowed down, but that does not mean it has stopped completely.

Setting up row covers is one of the tasks that is essential if you want to keep planting in the winter months. Row covers can help keep the frost off your broccolini and other winter crops that are a little more cold sensitive. Row covers can also be made from stuff laying around the house, like an old white sheet and metal clothes hangers.

Acclimating plants to the chilly weather can also be helpful when transplanting in these frosty months. Taking plants started indoors outside for a few hours each day can significantly boost their chances of thriving when transplanted into the garden.

Something we at SEEDS like to do in these long, cold months is help the birds maintain their energy and physical health by providing them with nourishing food. By sprinkling some seeds and setting up a water bowl you can help them a great deal during the harsh winter months.
