Volunteers are SEEDS' greatest resource. Throughout the year SEEDS relies on volunteers to maintain every aspect of our mission. We have opportunities for groups and individuals with a variety of interests, experience and available time.
We welcome groups of volunteers to help us with large projects; it is always inspiring to see how much can be accomplished with many hands working side by side. Please gather a group of your friends, co-workers, congregation, or fellow students and give us a call. We can usually schedule a workday that is convenient for you.
Because we are a small staff we have great need of volunteers who are able to commit to a weekly or monthly “job”. You will have consistent opportunities to apply your knowledge and experience to a worthwhile enterprise. This is also a great way to learn about gardening, non-profit administration, community outreach, and youth mentoring. Please see the descriptions below for more details.
Working with the guidance and support of the Garden Manager, you’ll get your hands dirty and learn the nuts and bolts of garden maintenance and small-scale food production. Volunteers can either pick a part of the garden to focus on that interests them (e.g. compost bins, flower beds, pond, perennial border, butterfly garden, food alley), or do a variety of tasks depending on what needs to be done. Scheduling is flexible; come any time that is convenient for you, or join one of our scheduled volunteer “workdays”.
SEEDlings SEEDlings provides a safe, supportive after school environment for neighborhood children ages 7 to 12. Assist the SEEDlings Coordinators with a variety of fun activities and then help kids with their homework. The program meets Monday through Friday from 3:30 to 5:45 pm at the SEEDS office.
Durham Inner-City Gardeners (DIG) Volunteer with the DIG crew if you are interested in learning about market gardening and food production and like working with young people. You’ll work with a crew of diverse teenagers to grow fruits, vegetables, and herbs for sale at the Durham Farmers’ Market. The DIG crew works Friday afternoons and Saturdays until school is out, then over the summer works several weekday mornings in addition.
Outreach and Publicity Work with the administrative staff to create program brochures and flyers for events, post and distribute brochures and fliers, issue and follow up on press releases, and represent SEEDS at outreach events.
Administrative Support Work with the administrative staff to assist with special projects such as bulk mailings and fundraisers.
In-Kind Donation Solicitor Work with the administrative staff and the Garden Manager to solicit donations of goods and services that SEEDS needs to fulfill its mission.
Please contact Jessamine Hyatt at (919) 683-1197 for further information about these volunteer opportunities or email info@seedsnc.org.
